Metal Roofing vs Shingles

Overview:

The two most common materials for roofs are metals and shingles. Both styles have their own advantages and disadvantages to consider. So, the question becomes: metal roof vs. shingle roof. Which material best fits your needs? Well…your friends over at Fortitude Roofing are the pros are will help you make the right decision on which you should chose!

Different Types:

A roof plays a crucial part in the overall appearance of a home. It can be the definitive factor that adds to or crushes your curb appeal. So let’s dive deep into the many differences between the two. The main difference between metal and shingle roofs is simple: they are made from different materials. Metal roofs are available in various metals, we offer Aluminum and Steel. When it comes to Shingles, we offer 3 different types: 3-Tab Shingle, Architectural Shingle, and Luxury Shingles. Now we know you may be confused about these different types so let’s break it down.

  • 3-Tab Shingle: The three-tab or standard shingle is a cost-effective option that is widely available. These shingles are a single layer and lat flat on the roof. Not recommended for Hurricane Zones.

  • Architectural Shingle: Architectural Roof shingles are laminated and create a dimensional look. Because these shingles are thicker and heavier they have a better wind rating and manufacturer's warranty than a standard shingle, typically around 30 years.

  • Luxury Shingles: Luxury shingles are a multi layer shingle making them the thickest, most durable shingle, often with the best manufacturer's rating of all the shingle types. These shingles typically meet even the strictest HOA requirements.

Maintenance:

One of the best things about a metal roof is that it’s extremely low maintenance. As long as your roof was installed professionally and correctly, all you need to do is clear debris and clean it in order to maintain a pristine look. While maintenance costs for an asphalt shingle roof aren’t outrageous, a metal roof simply requires less.

Durability:

Constant thermal cycling weathers asphalt shingles, reducing their lifespan. Because asphalt is absorptive, water can enter, freeze and dry, causing its structure to break down. Metal roofs, however, are non-absorptive. Plus, they’re engineered and installed with fastening clips or slotted screw holes that allow for thermal movement of the metal with temperature changes without breaking down over time. So the winner is, metal roofs (once again)!

Conclusion:

One of the most common questions we get asked at Fortitude Roofing is should I install a metal roof or an asphalt roof?
